One of the three major festivals of Fukuoka City, the Hojoya Festival is a celebration of life. Taking place in and around Hakozaki Shrine, approximately 1.5 million people make the trip the festival annually to show appreciation for life, and to give thanks for a bountiful harvest, family safety and more. With about 700 different vendors lining the one-kilometer street leading up to the shrine, one will find there is plenty of Japanese street food to sample on the way in and out. Held every September, at the same time of season the Japanese pears and persimmon ripen, the atmosphere of the festival is lively, and comes to an end with the ritual of freeing birds and fish, in accordance with the wishes of the gods.
