Every year on August 13 the night skies above the Kanmon Straits become ablaze with 15,000 fireworks. Launched in 1988 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Minato Railway project, today the Kanmon Straits Fireworks Festival draws crowds from all over the country. Approximately an hour in length, this is a joint festival held between Kitakyushu City in Fukuoka Prefecture and Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture – two cities separated by the Kanmon Straits. The display is launched over the sea, with more than 1 million spectators gathering on either side of the Kanmon Straits.
