THINGS TO DO > EVENT Tamaseseri Festival

An important national property, the Hakozaki Shrine is one of three major shrines of worship for the god, Hachiman. It is at this shrine that the Tamaseseri Festival takes place. In frigid temperatures, two teams of parishioners, one representing land and the other sea, strip down to their loincloths and compete on the temple grounds to see who can take possession of a large wooden ball as water is thrown around. If the winner happens to be from the sea team a good haul is foreseen. If the winner is from the land team it goes a good harvest. While there are two balls, one representing yin and the other yang, only the yang ball makes its way down to Hakozaki Shrine to be passed by the awaiting crowds of naked men, and purified with cold water. The other stays at the small Tamatori Ebisu Shrine.
