THINGS TO DO > EVENT Tobata Gion Oyamagasa

On the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, this spectacular festival is held over the course of three days every July in the Tobata Ward of Kitakyushu. The festival lasts from Friday through Sunday, before and after the fourth Saturday of July. The Tobata Gion Festival consists of three festivities that take place at the shrines Tobihata Hachimangu, Sugawara Shrine and Nakabaru Hachimangu. Four giant floats decorated with 12 flags are carried throughout town during the daytime. After nightfall, visitors can witness the float called the Pyramid of Light. This 10-meter-high, 2.5-ton float has 309 lanterns hanging from its 12 tiers is a sight to behold. There is also an exciting event called kyoenkai, in which four giant floats and four small floats compete in a fascinating display of bravado.
