THINGS TO DO > EVENT Toka Ebisu Festival

One of the quietest shrines in Fukuoka, the Toka Ebisu Shrine attracts more than one million visitors over a four-day period every January during the Toka Ebisu Festival. During this time people make the trip to the shrine to wish for success with business or personal matters. The highlight of the festival is the kachi-mairi, or walking visits, where people can catch a glimpse of traditional Hakata Kenban (apprentice geisha), who, adorned in old-fashioned formal kimono and traditional hairstyles, parade down the main street to the shrine.

January 8–11, annually (The geisha parade is from 15:00 on January 9)
