Shofukuji Temple

Shofukuji Temple was founded by the priest Eisai and was the first Zen temple ever built in Japan (as attested by the framed calligraphy on the main gate, presented by the Emperor Gotoba and inscribed with the words, “This is the First Zen Temple in Japan” ). The area has been designated a National Historical Site as the model for typical Zen Temples. Visitors will find Shotenji and Tochoji Temples as well as other temples and shrines with long and prestigious histories closeby, asserting their quiet presence.
