Japanese grenadier anchovy (which, in Japan, can only be found in the Ariake Sea) swim up the Chikugo River and arrive near the town of Jojima to spawn. During fishing season (from May to July), the anchovies are plump, juicy, and extremely delicious! Visitors who take a ride on a “yakatabune” (or pleasure boat) are in for a special treat of the freshest anchovy dishes! The Rokugoro Bridge standing out against the sunset is another one of the river’s highlights!
