Mojiko Retro District’s “Blowfish, Light, and Doll Festival”
From the Meiji through early Showa Eras (1868 – late 1920’s), Mojiko (like Yokohama and Kobe) bustled as a strategic port of international trade. Even now, simple yet elegant Western-style buildings line its streets.
The biggest event of the winter in Mojiko is the “Blowfish, Light, and Doll Festival”. Starting with the two meter (6.6 foot) long “Giant Blowfish Lantern” and the “Blowfish Portable Shrine” at the main venue, various decorative lights are strung up around the district. Charming, original blowfish lanterns can be found here and there, wrapping the streets in a soft and tranquil light. There are also a number of free blowfish hot pot and blowfish fin sake tasting events!
Decorative dolls (some over 100 years old!) can also be seen throughout the city.
