Sandalwood at Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin Temple

Sandalwood at Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin Temple in Maebaru of Itoshima City is an old tree municipally designated as a Natural Monument. Sandalwood is a close-grained, solid tree. It is famous for its beautiful glaze and elegant scent brought out while polishing cut ends. Two main branches of the tree are in a courtyard of the temple beginning at the surface. The unique shape is truly beautiful. The height is about 9 meters (30 feet) and circumference at the base is about 2 meters (6.6 feet). This magnificent tree is said to be about 600 years old.
