Morning Market in Nakashima

Nakashima is a small port town which is located near the Yabe river mouth at the southern tip of Yanagawa City. Because of the environment unique to the Ariake Sea whose tidal range is the greatest in Japan, rare fish like strange clams, sea anemones, and green eel gobies are landed there.
At the neighboring shopping street, the morning market which has lasted since the Edo Period (1603 – 1868) is open every morning, and Ariake’s seafoods, fresh vegetables, and processed products are sold there. At the market, the sellers’ cheerful hails with an accent like ”Why not come buy?” and ”I’ll give you a discount!” are heard. Although it’s irregular, local foods sampling events are also held.
