Eupatorium japonicum (fragrant eupatorium) and chestnut tiger butterflies
Fragrant eupatorium is one of the seven autumn flowers. The best time to see them is in October, however the Shiranoe Botanical Gardens is famous because for the chestnut tiger butterflies that visit there every autumn for the nectar of the fragrant eupatorium flowers.
The chestnut tigers have a poison known as ’pitadillin alkaloid (PA)’ which is used as a sex pheromone by the male butterflies. These traveling butterflies known as ”chestnut tigers” drink the nectar of poisonous plants (such as fragrant eupatorium) and convert it to poison in their bodies, which helps them to escape from predators such as birds, etc. The butterflies migrate to north from spring to summer, and migrate to south in fall.
