Red and Green Umegae Mochi

When many people hear Dazaifu, they immediately think of ”umegae mochi” (rice cakes filled with sweet bean paste sold at the shrine). Did you know that there are actually three flavors of umegae mochi, one of the representative souvenirs of Fukuoka?
On the 25th of each month, for ”Tenjin Day” in commemoration of the birth and death of Sugawara no Michizane (Tenjin), umegae mochi made with yomogi (green powder made from mug wort plant) are sold.
In addition, on the 17th of every month, for ”Kyuhaku Day” (Kyuhaku = Kyushu Hakubutsukan, a history museum), umegae mochi made with kodaimai (literally ”ancient rice” or black rice) are sold. It was created in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Kyushu National Museum in Dazaifu.
Please be sure to try these special umegae mochi.
