THINGS TO DO > HISTORY Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Every year approximately 10 million visitors are attracted to Dazaifu Tenmangu, which is considered one of the most important shrines in Japan. Dazaifu Tenmangu is the leading shrine of over 12,000 in the country dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane – a ninth-century scholar, poet and politician now revered as Tenjin-sama, the god of learning and sincerity and a protector from evil. The shrine was built in 905 over Tenjin-sama’s grave site, two years after his death. What is more, Dazaifu City is rich with nature and has a prosperous ancient history, and around the shrine are several historical sites as well as the Kyushu National Museum. The shrine also hosts individual and communal prayer sessions to Tenjin-sama, free to all regardless of age or origin.
