THINGS TO DO > HISTORY Gyorakuen Garden

Located in the Chikuho area, this garden was designed by Sesshu (1420–1506), one of the most prominent painters in Japanese history, using landscaping techniques he learned from China which use and enhance the natural terrain. The stonework is suffused with Buddha symbolism and the garden resembles a mandala. Nestled in the scenery is the 160-year-old aristocratic-style residence of the Fujie family. There are few scenes more picturesque than the garden view from the porch, with the wind blowing from the mountains. You can also spend some contemplative time at the café on site.
