Itoshima
Despite bearing the Japanese word for island in its name, Itoshima is, in fact, a town on the western edge of Fukuoka Prefecture. This small town, however, boasts some of Japan’s best beaches, seaside resorts and popular sites for surfing and hiking. The most popular (and romantic) site on Itoshima is Sakurai Futamigaura, where you can watch the sun set between two sacred rocks that are connected by a shimenawa (a cord of rope used to mark sacred Shinto places). It’s a sight you can’t easily forget — the sky turns deep orange and red, the sun looks at hand’s reach and the ocean suddenly looks calm and quiet. Because of this Sakurai Futamigaura was selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Beach Sunsets in Japan. Aside from beautiful natural sights, Itoshima is also home to tropical-themed cafés and restaurants and art venues. Rent a bicycle and tour around the town to discover more of its splendid beauties.
