THINGS TO DO > HISTORY Kaho Theater

First opening its doors in 1922, Iizuka’s Kaho Theater is the only two-story wooden kabuki playhouse in all of Japan. Originally a place built for the local coal miners to relax and enjoy the traditional play is famous for its outlandish costumes, the Kaho Theater has today expanded its repertoire to also include concerts, rakugo comedy and other performances. Besides that, though, the theater hasn’t changed much during its nearly 100-year-long history and still requires a combined team to operate its rotating stage and trapdoor by hand.
