THINGS TO DO > NATURE Kawachi Wisteria Garden

Walking under a seemingly endless canopy of wisteria at Kawachi Wisteria Garden in Fukuoka’s Kitakyushu City is a breathtaking sight (and scent) that attracts thousands of visitors every spring in late April and early May when 22 different varieties of wisteria are in full bloom. Selected as one of the “31 Most Beautiful Places in Japan” by CNN in 2015, the Kawachi Wisteria Garden was the brainchild of Masao Higuchi, who founded the garden in 1977. He was inspired by his childhood dream “to leave a proof of (his) life to the world.” At Kawachi, they have transformed their passion into beautiful wisteria flower tunnels, which now draws people from all over the world.
