Moji Ward in Kitakyushu City is home to Mojiko (Moji Port), a delightful blend of old and new Western architecture. The port opened in 1889 and the area that flourished in the early 20th century. Many of the buildings from that time remain and together make up the district of Mojiko Retro. Here you can promenade between old renaissance-style and brick buildings or view them from the Mojiko Retro Observation Room on the 31st floor of Retro Highmart, the tallest building in the area. While you’re in the area, be sure to try the local specialty yaki curry, a hearty cheese-covered curry casserole dish.
