Yatai (street food stalls) are a staple of Fukuoka and contribute immensely to the prefectural capital’s rich culinary culture. These small compact restaurants usually offer limited seating, and it is customary not to linger too long. Though you can find yatai in other areas, they are mostly in the Nakasu and Tenjin neighborhoods, and are excellent spots to experience Fukuoka’s warm sense of community. Among the many Japanese street food items you can discover, there is of course tonkotsu ramen (pork bone broth noodles), a regional specialty characterized by a thick milky broth. Other dishes you can pick up are yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and gyoza (Japanese dumplings).
